Time: Thursday mornings, 9:00-11:15. There will be two hours of class with one 10-15 minute break each day. During the break, families will take turns providing snacks for the whole class.
Location: My personal home on the West Side of Santa Cruz near the intersection of Mission and Laurel. Transportation may be available to and from the AFE campus and/or the Quail Hollow Integrated Arts program before and after class.
Details: This supplemental math class is open to 6th-8th grade students. The course will explore a variety of hands-on projects and puzzles involving geometry, graphing, measurement, arithmetic, algebra, logic, applications to science or engineering, etc. Relevant math concepts and skills will be reviewed as needed. Projects will be accessible at various skill levels, and more challenging material will always be available for students who are ready for it.
Class time will include individual and small-group projects as well as whole-class discussions. In addition to math skills, I will work with the students on perseverance, overcoming perfectionism, teamwork, effective study habits, etc. While student will be given formal and informal feedback on their work, I will not be assigning grades for overall student performance.
Textbook and Homework: Students will be asked to read one chapter each week from The Number Devil, by Hans Magnus Enzensberger, which we will discuss in class the following week. In addition, they will need to use outside time to prepare one oral presentation during the semester. These will be the only required homework assignments.
Prerequisites: Students should have mastered typical material found in 5th grade math classes, including basic operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, graphing points, using variables in simple equations, measuring lengths and angles, calculating perimeter, area, and volume, etc. In addition, all students must be able to work productively and politely in groups with all other students in the class, and must follow my behavior expectations at all times.
Schedule: Class is scheduled to meet on 14 Thursdays. Up to 1 class may be cancelled during the fall semester due to instructor illness or other reasons with no change in course fees.
NOTE: I have not yet fully determined my spring semester teaching schedule. It is possible that I will continue to offer this course, or a similar course for the same students, at the same time in the spring semester, but it depends on factors not known at this time.
Tuition: Total tuition is $320 for the fall semester, broken into a non-refundable $80 enrollment deposit, and 3 monthly payments of $80 each, September through November. Tuition is meant to offset the instructor's time and costs, not to prevent appropriate students from enrolling. Financial aid and work trades are available if needed. Unfortunately, at this time I am not an Ocean Grove vendor.
For new students I do not know, the first four classes are a trial period. If during that time the family decides that my class or teaching style is not a match for their student, I will refund your tuition except for the non-refundable deposit. If I decide that your student is not a match for my teaching style, I will refund all payments, including the deposit.
